Privacy Policy — HomeShield
Last updated: October 5, 2026
1. Overview
HomeShield ("the app", "we", "our") is a household pest and mosquito treatment reminder app. This policy explains what data the app collects, how it is used, and your rights as a user.
The short version: all your personal data stays on your device. We do not collect it, store it on any server, or share it with anyone.
2. Information Collected
2.1 Data you provide
During setup you may enter:
- Your first name
- Your age range
- Your household size
- Your city or town name
- Details about your home setup (bed net, window screens, home type, standing water)
- Pest treatment history and preferences
This information is stored locally on your device only, using Android's secure storage (Capacitor Preferences). It never leaves your device and is never transmitted to us or any third party.
2.2 Location data
The app requests your approximate location (or accepts a city name you type) for one purpose only: to fetch local weather data (temperature, humidity, rainfall) from the Open-Meteo API. Your latitude and longitude coordinates are sent to Open-Meteo's servers to retrieve this forecast.
- We do not store your location on any server.
- Open-Meteo is an open-source weather service. Their privacy policy is available at open-meteo.com.
- If you type your city name instead of using GPS, your city name may be sent to OpenStreetMap Nominatim to look up coordinates. Nominatim's privacy policy is available at nominatim.org.
- HomeShield does not track your location continuously or in the background.
2.3 Treatment log data
When you mark a treatment as done, the app records the product name and date. This data is stored locally on your device only and is never transmitted anywhere.
2.4 No analytics or tracking
HomeShield contains no analytics SDKs, crash reporting tools, advertising identifiers, or tracking pixels. We collect no usage statistics, session data, or behavioral data of any kind.
3. How We Use Information
All data collected is used solely to:
- Calculate your household's mosquito risk level
- Build and display your treatment schedule and reminders
- Generate the 7-day bite risk forecast
- Send local push notifications at your chosen reminder time
No data is used for advertising, profiling, or any purpose other than the features described above.
4. Data Storage and Security
All household data, treatment logs, and preferences are stored locally on your device using Android secure storage. The data is:
- Never uploaded to any server operated by us
- Never backed up to cloud services by the app itself (your device's own backup settings may apply)
- Deleted when you uninstall the app
5. Notifications
HomeShield uses local notifications only. These are scheduled entirely on your device by the app and do not require an internet connection or any server to deliver. We do not send remote push notifications.
6. Third-Party Services
The app communicates with the following external services:
| Service | Purpose | Data sent |
|---|---|---|
| Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) | 7-day weather forecast | Latitude, longitude |
| OpenStreetMap Nominatim (nominatim.org) | City name → coordinates lookup | City name (only if GPS not used) |
No other external services, APIs, or SDKs are used. There are no advertising networks, no social media SDKs, and no third-party analytics in this app.
7. GDPR Privacy (EEA, UK and Switzerland)
If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom or Switzerland, the GDPR / UK GDPR applies to you. The same rights are available to people in Nigeria under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and in other places with similar laws.
Who is the data controller
John Osakwe (Etest), Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria is the controller of the personal data described in this policy. Contact: johnosakwe03@gmail.com
Why we process data, and our legal basis
| Purpose | Data | Legal basis (GDPR Art. 6) |
|---|---|---|
| Local weather forecast and mosquito risk level | Approximate location (latitude and longitude) sent to Open-Meteo; a typed city name sent to OpenStreetMap Nominatim | Your consent (6(1)(a)) when you allow location access, withdrawable in your device settings. If you type a city instead, performance of the service you asked for (6(1)(b)) |
| Household setup, treatment log and reminders | Stored and processed on your device only; we do not receive it | Not applicable, because the data never reaches us |
International transfers
Open-Meteo and OpenStreetMap Nominatim run their own servers, which may be outside your country. Only the data listed in the table is sent to them, and everything else stays on your device. See Section 6 for links to their privacy policies.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you
- have it corrected
- have it deleted (the "right to be forgotten")
- restrict or object to its processing, including processing based on legitimate interests
- receive it in a portable format
- withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing that happened before you withdrew it
- complain to a data protection authority, such as the one in your country (in the UK, the ICO; in Nigeria, the NDPC)
Because we do not receive your household data, there is nothing for us to access, correct or delete on your behalf. Uninstalling the app deletes it. For location data held by Open-Meteo or Nominatim, contact those services directly.
To use any of these rights, email johnosakwe03@gmail.com. We will respond within one month.
8. Children's Privacy
HomeShield does not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. The app does not require account creation and stores no personally identifiable information on any server. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided information through this app, please contact us and we will assist you.
9. Medical Disclaimer
HomeShield is a log-and-remind application only. It does not provide medical advice, diagnose conditions, or prescribe treatments. Risk scores and forecasts are estimates based on weather and household setup. Always follow product label instructions and consult a qualified health professional for any health concerns.
10. Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this document and note the change in the app's release notes. Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
