Best football tactics board apps in 2026, compared

Nine football tactics board apps compared from their App Store and Google Play listings: drills, animation, sharing and Android. I make one.

The best football tactics board app depends on what you coach. Going only by their store listings, the main ones are Coach Tactic Board, TacticalPad, Tactics Board: Soccer, Tacbo, Coach Board, CoachPad, Soccer Board and TacticBoard, plus Tactics Board 3D, which I make. For cone drills, look at Coach Tactic Board. For match plans, mine.

    Key points

    • I make Tactics Board 3D: Soccer Coach, on the App Store and Google Play. Read the table knowing that.
    • Every claim about the other eight apps comes from their own App Store or Google Play listing, read on 25 October 2026. I have not used them.
    • Seven of the nine have a Google Play listing I could find. Tacbo and Coach Board are iPhone and iPad only.
    • If you plan training drills with cones and ladders, pick an app with an equipment library. Tactics Board 3D does not have one.
    • The biggest split is drills against match plans. Some apps are built around cones and sessions, others around shape and set pieces.

What should a football tactics board app do?

Four jobs cover most of what a coach needs.

    1. Lineup. Pick a pitch size and a formation, then drag players into place.
    2. Drawing. Passes, runs, zones and freehand notes, with undo when you get it wrong on the touchline.
    3. Movement. Steps or animation, so players see the sequence and not just the end picture.
    4. Sharing. An image or a short animation you can drop into the team chat the night before a game.

Drill design is a fifth job, and it is a different one. If your sessions are built from cones, gates and mannequins, you need an app with that equipment, and most of the apps below have it.

Which football tactics board apps did I compare?

I searched the US App Store and Google Play for "football tactics board" and "soccer tactics board" on 25 October 2026. I took apps that came up near the top, were updated in the last year, and were real tactics boards rather than games or lineup makers. Listings change, so treat the dates as a stamp.

App, as named on the store Made by Where I found it What the listing says it has
Tactics Board 3D: Soccer Coach John Osakwe, Etest Tech Hub iPhone, iPad, Android 5, 7, 9 or 11 a side with formations for each, a squad of 23 with a bench, pass and run arrows, zones, a pen, steps with Play, 2D or 3D, image or GIF sharing. No account.
Coach Tactic Board: Soccer Grzegorz Kipa on the App Store, Bluelinden on Google Play iPhone, iPad, Android Animated plays, drills with cones, balls and ladders, folders, full, half and training pitches, subs, a staff chat, export as image or PDF, and video on Android.
TacticalPad Coach's Whiteboard F Closs on the App Store, Temma Software on Google Play iPhone, iPad, Android Animated plays, a 3D view, many sports, training items, export as images or video.
Tactics Board: Soccer Andrea Rosario Censabella, shown as CensaSoft on Google Play iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, browser Many line types, equipment from cones to dummies, frame by frame animation, ready made plays, image, video and PDF export.
Tacbo: Soccer Tactics Board Gaku Morita iPhone, iPad A presenting board and a build mode, adjustable field size, guide lines, a zone feature for space and passing distance. Save as images.
Tactical Board: Coach Board Aberkane Software House iPhone, iPad Many sports, equipment, full and half fields, animated drills exported as video, an AI assistant for sessions.
CoachPad Football Tactic Board Metechi Android Formations, equipment, frame by frame animation, a feed for sharing with other coaches, PNG and MP4 export.
Soccer Board: Tactics and Drills razuma Android Drag players, line symbols, record or frame by frame animation with 0.5x to 2x playback, 11 and 8 a side pitches, cones and mini goals, image or video share.
TacticBoard: Tactics Board Wisdompeak Apps Android Five sports, step by step animation, image or GIF export, squads with formations from 4+1 to 10+1, works offline.

I left out star ratings and download counts. When I asked ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode the same question on 25 October, they also named browser tools such as JLA Tactics Board and TacticBoard.app. I left those out because they are websites, not store apps, so there is no listing to check.

    Which app suits which coach?

Here is how I would match them, going only by what each listing promises.

    • You coach small sided football. Tactics Board 3D has formations for 5, 7, 9 and 11 a side. Soccer Board lists 7, 8, 9 and 11, and TacticBoard goes from 4+1 to 10+1. My guide to tactics board apps for 7v7 and 9v9 youth soccer goes deeper on this.
    • You build training sessions from drills. Coach Tactic Board, Tactics Board: Soccer, Soccer Board and CoachPad all list cones and other equipment.
    • You coach more than one sport. TacticalPad, Coach Board and TacticBoard list several sports.
    • You work with a staff of coaches. Coach Tactic Board lists a chat for coaching staff that works across Android and iOS.
    • You plan at a desk, then coach on a tablet. Tactics Board: Soccer has a browser version, and it syncs boards.
    • You want to study space. Tacbo's zone feature is built for that.

My honest take: most grassroots coaches need far less than these apps offer. One clear picture of your shape, and one of your main set piece, sent the night before, will do more than a library of 40 plays nobody opens.

Where the other apps beat Tactics Board 3D

I built mine for match plans, so it loses on several things coaches ask for.

    • Drills. It has no equipment library. Coach Tactic Board, Tactics Board: Soccer, Soccer Board and CoachPad do.
    • Video. It shares GIFs and images. Coach Tactic Board on Android, TacticalPad, CoachPad, Soccer Board, Tactics Board: Soccer and Coach Board list video export.
    • PDF session sheets. Coach Tactic Board and Tactics Board: Soccer export PDF. Mine does not.
    • Sync. Tactics Board: Soccer and CoachPad can sync between devices. Mine keeps everything on one device.
    • Other sports. Mine is football only.
    • Playback control. Soccer Board plays back at 0.5x to 2x. Mine plays at one speed.

What does Tactics Board 3D do, and not do?

Tactics Board 3D: Soccer Coach is strongest at lineups and moves.

    • Pick 5, 7, 9 or 11 a side and a formation for each team: 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, 3-5-2, 3-4-3, 5-3-2 and 4-1-4-1 for 11 a side, and shapes such as 3-3-2, 2-3-1 and 2-2 for smaller sides.
    • Keep a squad of up to 23 with a bench, and make substitutions.
    • Draw solid arrows for passes, dashed arrows for runs, shaded zones and freehand notes, with undo and redo.
    • Add steps, then press Play to watch the players and the ball move between them.
    • Switch between a flat 2D board and a tilted 3D view. Tablets get a full landscape layout.
    • Share a step as an image, or the whole play as an animated GIF.
    • No account. Plays and teams stay on your device.

Nothing gets in the way while you are moving players or drawing. You can also set custom kit colours and save your teams.

One note on the name, because it gets mixed up. Tactics Board 3D is not the same app as Tactics Board: Soccer, Tactical Board: Coach Board or TacticBoard. It used to be called Football Tactics Board 3D on the App Store, and Team Tactics inside the app. See Tactics Board 3D.

    How I wrote this

On 25 October 2026 I searched the US App Store and Google Play for football and soccer tactics board apps and read each listing in full. Every claim about another app comes from its own listing on that date. I have not installed or tested them, and I left out ratings and download counts. I asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode which apps they recommend, and checked search volumes in Google's Keyword Planner for the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Nigeria. The Tactics Board 3D details come from the app's own code and its store listings. I first wrote this post on 24 October and updated it on 25 October with the Android listings and three more apps.

By John Osakwe, founder of Etest Tech Hub. I have built apps and websites since 2015, including Etest CBT, FizzFree, Pawlarm and Tactics Board 3D.
