What is ExtraHalf? A no tax on overtime calculator for hourly work
ExtraHalf is a no tax on overtime calculator and tip tracker for US hourly workers on Android. What it works out and how the extra half rule works.

ExtraHalf is a no tax on overtime calculator and tip tracker for US hourly workers on Android. You log shifts, tips or pay stub totals, and it estimates how much the federal deduction for qualified overtime and tips could take off your federal income tax. I built it. It needs no account, and the figures are estimates.
The name comes from the rule itself: only the extra half of time and a half counts.
Key points
- What it is: an overtime calculator, hours tracker and tip tracker that knows the federal deduction rules.
- The rule it applies: for tax years 2025 through 2028, qualified overtime (up to $12,500, or $25,000 filing jointly) and qualified tips (up to $25,000) can be deducted on your federal return.
- The catch: only the premium half of time and a half counts as qualified overtime.
- Where: Google Play, com.extrahalf.app. Not on the App Store yet.
- Works: no account; a year end PDF and CSV for you or your tax preparer.
What does "only the extra half counts" mean?
Say you earn $20 an hour and $30 an hour for overtime. People hear "no tax on overtime" and assume the whole $30 is deductible. It is not. The deductible part is the $10 premium, the extra half on top of your normal rate.
| Per overtime hour | |
|---|---|
| Normal rate | $20 |
| Overtime rate (time and a half) | $30 |
| Qualified overtime (the extra half) | $10 |
Work 10 overtime hours a week for 50 weeks and that is $5,000 of qualified overtime for the year, well under the $12,500 cap. It is a deduction from income, not a refund of that amount, so what you keep depends on your tax bracket. That last step is what most people cannot work out on the back of a pay stub.
What does ExtraHalf work out?
- A quick estimate. Four questions: hourly rate, usual weekly overtime hours, weekly tips and filing status. It shows the deduction and the federal tax you could keep this year, line by line.
- A running total. Log shifts with hours, cash tips and card tips, or add pay stub totals, and watch both deductions grow.
- Hours to overtime. How many hours are left before overtime starts this week or pay period.
- A 2025 return check. One pay stub is enough to see if you missed the deduction and what an amended return could change.
- Your W-4 figure. The per paycheck amount for the new W-4 lines, so the saving shows up in each check instead of once a year.
- A W-2 cross check against what your employer reports.
- A year end report as PDF and CSV.
It also includes ten worked examples, from a warehouse worker to a barber.
Which overtime counts?
Only overtime that federal law requires. ExtraHalf applies weekly overtime after 40 hours, hospital 8/80 schedules, and fire and police work periods. It flags pay that looks like overtime but may not qualify, such as daily overtime under a state law or overtime that only a union contract requires.
Who makes ExtraHalf?
I do. I am John Osakwe, and I have built apps and websites under Etest Tech Hub since 2015. ExtraHalf is listed on Google Play under E-TEST APPS. More is on the ExtraHalf page.
What ExtraHalf does not do
- It does not file your taxes or send anything to the IRS.
- It does not need an account, and there is no server holding your pay data.
- It does not replace a tax professional. Its numbers are estimates.
Frequently asked questions
Is all overtime untaxed under the new rule?
No. Only qualified overtime counts, which is the premium half of time and a half for overtime that federal law requires, up to $12,500 a year ($25,000 filing jointly). It is a deduction from federal income tax, not an exemption from all tax.
Does ExtraHalf work for tips too?
Yes. You can log cash and card tips, and it tracks the separate deduction for qualified tips, up to $25,000 a year.
Can ExtraHalf check my 2025 return?
It can estimate whether you missed the deduction. Enter one pay stub and it shows what an amended return could change. Check the result with a tax preparer before you file anything.
Is ExtraHalf on iPhone?
Not yet. ExtraHalf is on Google Play for Android.
Does ExtraHalf need an account?
No. There is no account and no backend. Your shifts and pay stubs stay on your phone.
How I wrote this
On 3 November 2026 I read the ExtraHalf Google Play listing, checked search volumes in Google Keyword Planner and looked at Google Trends for "no tax on overtime" in the United States. The rule details are the ones ExtraHalf applies, as described on its store listing.
