Dog medication reminder: how to never miss or double a dose
How to set a dog medication reminder for daily, twice a day, monthly and course doses, log each one as given, and hand over to a sitter. Apps compared.

A dog medication reminder has two jobs: ping you when a dose is due, and record that it was given so nobody gives it twice. Set one reminder per medicine, tap Done the moment the dose goes in, and check the history before anyone else doses. For the dose itself, follow your vet's label.
Key points
- Log every dose. A reminder you can't tick off is only half the job. The log is what stops a double dose.
- Match the reminder to the pattern: daily, twice a day, a course with a last day, monthly, or every 6 or 12 months.
- Monthly doses need the most care. The American Heartworm Society says a late or missed heartworm dose can leave a dog unprotected.
- Hand over in writing. A sitter needs the medicine, the time and the label, not a memory of what you said.
- Apps that log doses: Pawlarm, TailCare and PipDose on iPhone, Pawlarm and Pet Medication & Pill Reminder on Android.
- I built Pawlarm. The other apps are described from their own store listings, read on 4 November 2026.
How do I make sure I never miss or double a dose?
Give one person the job, log the dose the moment it's given, and look at the log before giving anything. Missed doses come from no reminder. Double doses come from two people each thinking the other forgot. A reminder fixes the first problem, and only a shared record fixes the second.
It happens more than people admit. When I searched X for owners who'd lost track, one had forgotten they'd already put flea treatment on their cat. That's the double dose in one sentence.
So, three habits:
- Tap Done straight away, not after the dog has finished eating.
- Check "last done" first if you're unsure. A good app shows the time, not just a tick.
- Ask your vet what to do about a missed dose before it happens. The FDA lists this as one of the questions to ask when your vet prescribes a medicine. Don't guess, and don't double up to catch up unless your vet says so.
How should I set reminders for each dosing pattern?
Set the reminder to match the pattern on the label: a daily time, two daily times, a daily reminder with a last day for a course, a monthly date, or a yearly date for long acting products. The table shows how each one fails and what to set.
| Pattern | Typical example | What to set | What goes wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Once a day | A daily tablet your vet prescribed | One daily reminder | Two people both give it |
| Twice a day | A medicine given morning and evening | One daily reminder with two times | The evening dose slips |
| A course | Antibiotics for a set number of days | A daily reminder with a last day | Stopping when the dog seems better |
| Monthly | A flea, tick or heartworm chew or spot on | A monthly reminder on the day of the last dose | The dose drifts a week late |
| Every 6 or 12 months | Injectable heartworm prevention, per the AHS | A yearly or one time reminder | Forgetting it exists |
The times and the number of days come from your vet and the label. I don't give dosing advice, and an app shouldn't either.
What about twice a day medicines and antibiotic courses?
Use one reminder with two times rather than two separate reminders, and give a course a last day so it stops by itself. Then you can see both doses on one line, and the reminder ends on the right day instead of nagging you, or quietly stopping, too soon.
With a course, the risk is stopping early. The FDA suggests asking your vet whether to finish all the medication even if your pet seems better. Ask at the clinic, and write the answer in the reminder's note.
One honest note on Pawlarm here. A missed monthly or yearly item waits on the Today screen for 7 days, but a missed daily one doesn't, because daily items would pile up. For twice a day medicines, the history is where you check. It shows when each dose was marked done, and flags one done late against its due time.
How do I keep monthly flea and heartworm doses on time?
Set the monthly reminder for the day you actually gave the last dose, and move it if you give one late. The American Heartworm Society says monthly preventives must be given strictly on schedule, and that after two missed months you should call your vet, restart and retest 6 months later.
The AHS also recommends prevention 12 months a year and a test every 12 months. So this reminder never really ends. I wrote more about it in flea and heartworm prevention, what monthly means, and deworming has its own rhythm, covered in the dog deworming schedule.
How do I hand dog medicines over to a sitter?
Write it down: the medicine name as on the label, the times, whether it goes with food, and what to do if a dose is missed. Leave the medicine in its original labeled container. The FDA says to keep animal medicines in their labeled containers and stored apart from human ones, to avoid mix ups.
Then agree on how the sitter logs doses. A text after each one works fine. My bias, for what it's worth: paper on the fridge beats any app for a short stay, when the sitter is a neighbour who'll be there twice.
In Pawlarm, Share care sheet sends a plain text list of your pet's current reminders, with your own notes, to a sitter, walker or partner. It doesn't add anything about doses, and there's no live sync between phones, so the sitter's ticks don't reach yours.
Which apps work as a dog medication reminder?
The apps built around doses log each one as given, skipped or missed: TailCare and PipDose on iPhone, Pet Medication & Pill Reminder on Android. Pawlarm does medicine reminders inside a full care plan on both. PetNoter keeps medication records with reminders. I read each listing on 4 November 2026.
Pawlarm. The app I built. Tap Done on each dose and it goes into the care history, so whoever doses next on that phone can see it was given. A dog's plan starts with monthly flea and tick and heartworm reminders, and you add any medicine as a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or one time reminder, with several times a day if needed and a last day for a course. Snooze on the notification if you need a minute, and share a care sheet with a sitter. No account. App Store, Google Play or the Pawlarm page.
Pet Medicine Reminder TailCare. The fullest dose app I found. Mark as Given or Snooze on the notification, an optional second reminder if a dose isn't marked, schedules every few days or weeks, and a history of given, skipped and missed doses. Its own examples include a course of antibiotics and a monthly flea treatment. It needs iOS 26.
Pet Medication & Pill Reminder. The Android pick for doses. Log dose, Skip or Undo from the Today view, a course with an end date, and a history you can share with your vet as a summary.
PipDose: Pet Med Reminder. Simple logging of taken, skipped and snoozed doses, plus refill tracking, with no account.
PetNoter. Medication reminders and records on both stores, alongside vaccines and vet visits.

Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest way to remember my dog's medication?
Put one reminder per medicine on your phone at the time your vet gave you, and tap Done the moment you give it. Apps like Pawlarm, TailCare and Pet Medication & Pill Reminder keep a history, so you can check whether today's dose already went in.
What should I do if I forget my dog's dose?
Ask your vet, and ideally ask before it happens, when the medicine is prescribed. The FDA lists "what should I do if I forget a dose" as a question to ask. For heartworm preventives, the American Heartworm Society says to call your vet after two missed months.
Can I set a reminder for monthly flea and heartworm treatment?
Yes. Pawlarm adds monthly flea and tick and heartworm reminders when you set up a dog, and you can move them to the day you give the dose. TailCare and Pet Medication & Pill Reminder also handle monthly doses and keep a log.
How do I stop my family giving the dog medicine twice?
Agree that whoever gives the dose logs it at once, and that everyone checks the log first. Pawlarm keeps its log on one phone, with no live sync, so one person should own the medicine. TailCare syncs through iCloud between your own iPhone and iPad.
How I wrote this
On 4 November 2026 I read the FDA's consumer update on medication errors in pets, the American Heartworm Society's heartworm basics page and the store listings of each app named here. I checked Pawlarm's schedules, history and care sheet in the app's code. I didn't test the other apps. I'm not a vet, and nothing here is dosing advice.
