JAMB and exam prep
JAMB CBT time management: how long you have per question
JAMB CBT time management: 180 questions in 2 hours is 40 seconds each on average. A three pass plan, the sums, and four weeks of drills.

JAMB CBT time management starts with one number. A UTME of 180 questions in two hours gives you 40 seconds a question on average. Almost no question takes that long, so work in three passes: answer the quick ones, return to the ones you skipped, and fill every blank before the clock stops.
Key points
- The UTME is reported as 180 questions in two hours: 60 in Use of English and 40 in each of three other subjects.
- Forty seconds is an average. A synonym can take 8 seconds and a physics calculation can take 3 minutes.
- A plan of about 70, 40 and 10 minutes gives hard questions the time the easy ones save.
- JAMB has not published a 2027 format, and a committee is looking at what the exam tests.
How many questions are in JAMB, and how long is the exam?
The UTME has 180 questions in two hours, according to Monoed's guide updated on 30 September 2026. Use of English has 60 and each of the other three subjects has 40. I could not open JAMB's own structure document, so I am relying on that guide for the split. The two hours match JAMB's bulletin of 21 September 2026, which says candidates for the first session of the 2027 exam arrive by 7:30 am and write from 8:30 to 10:30 am.
One caution. JAMB's bulletin of 28 September 2026 says a committee is developing a framework for life skills and critical thinking in the UTME. No decision is published, so I cannot tell you that the 2027 paper keeps this format. Plan around 180 questions in two hours and read the 2027 notice when it comes.
How long per question does JAMB CBT give you?
On average 40 seconds, because 120 minutes divided by 180 questions is 40 seconds.
| Subject | Questions | At 40 seconds each |
|---|---|---|
| Use of English | 60 | 40 minutes |
| Subject two | 40 | 26 minutes 40 seconds |
| Subject three | 40 | 26 minutes 40 seconds |
| Subject four | 40 | 26 minutes 40 seconds |
| Total | 180 | 120 minutes |
That plan uses every minute and leaves nothing for checking. You have to be faster than 40 seconds on many questions to buy time for the slow ones. I found no separate time limit per subject, so I treat the two hours as one block and split it myself.
What is a good JAMB CBT time management plan?
Make three passes over the paper. This plan is my own suggestion, and you should change the numbers once you know your pace.
| Pass | Job | Time |
|---|---|---|
| One | Answer what you can in about half a minute. Skip the rest and remember the number | About 70 minutes |
| Two | Go back to the skipped questions | About 40 minutes |
| Three | Fill every blank, then check again the doubtful ones | Last 10 minutes |
The sums: if you answer 150 questions at 28 seconds each, pass one takes 70 minutes. That leaves 30 questions, and at 80 seconds each pass two takes 40 minutes. Your calculations belong in that pass, because you now have time to think. Pass three is for blanks. 70 plus 40 plus 10 makes 120.
A student strong in Mathematics and weak in English will split the time differently, and that is fine.
Can I skip a question and come back to it?
I could not confirm the controls of the real exam screen from a JAMB source. JAMB's 2027 test console, which is on its site for centres, is a network test and computer registration tool and says nothing about the candidate screen. So find out at your centre, or from someone who has sat the exam, whether you can jump between questions and whether there is a flag.
My plan assumes you can go back. If you cannot, pass one becomes the only pass, and your speed on every question matters more. When you skip a question in practice, write its number on a scrap of paper or hold it in your head, and do that on every practice paper so the habit is automatic.
How do I handle calculation questions in JAMB CBT?
Give a calculation one look. If you can see the first step, do it. If you cannot tell what is being asked, skip it and return in pass two. I have not seen JAMB confirm whether a calculator is available in each subject, so practise simple arithmetic by hand.
What should I do in the last five minutes?
Look for blanks first and fill them. Then go back to the questions where you were stuck between two answers. I would leave alone the answers you were sure about, because second guessing them costs marks more often than it earns them. That is my view, and I have no data on it.
Which drills build exam pace?
Build up in steps. Monoed suggests 10 questions, then 20, then 40, then a full mock, with a review after each.
- Week one: 10 questions in 5 minutes, daily, in one subject.
- Week two: 20 questions in 12 minutes.
- Week three: 40 questions in 25 minutes, just under the 26 minutes 40 seconds the sums allow.
- Week four: a full 180 question run in two hours using the three passes.
After each drill write down your real time and which questions ate it. In a month you will know your slow topics, and that list is worth more than the score. The topic rounds that come before timed work are in how to use JAMB past questions.
Can I practise these timings in Etest JAMB CBT?
Yes. In Etest JAMB CBT you can set a timed exam to 60, 90, 120, 150 or 180 minutes and flag a question to come back to. When you finish, the results screen shows a breakdown by subject. There is also a Full JAMB mock setting with Use of English plus three subjects, 60 plus 40 plus 40 plus 40 questions in two hours.
I built it for pacing practice. I do not claim it matches the real exam screen, and a score from it will not predict your result on the day. It shows you where your time goes. If you are still choosing subjects, start with how to choose and check your JAMB subject combination.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are in JAMB?
The UTME is reported as 180 questions: 60 in Use of English and 40 in each of three other subjects. JAMB has not published a 2027 format, and its committee on life skills and critical thinking has not announced a decision, so check the 2027 notice when it appears.
How long is the UTME?
Two hours, going by Monoed's guide and JAMB's 21 September 2026 bulletin. For the first session of the 2027 exam, the bulletin says candidates arrive by 7:30 am and the exam runs from 8:30 to 10:30 am. Other sessions may have different times, so read your own slip.
Is it better to finish early or use all the time?
Use all of it, but spend the spare minutes on skipped questions and blanks. Finishing early with errors you could have caught wastes marks. If you finish pass two with time left, go back to the answers where you were torn between two options.
How do I stop running out of time in a CBT?
Time yourself in practice and write down where the minutes went. Most students lose them on a few long questions. Set a limit of about 80 seconds per question in pass two, and if you pass it, make your best guess and move on.
How I wrote this
On 15 October 2026 I read JAMB's bulletins of 21 and 28 September and Monoed's guide, and worked the arithmetic myself. I could not verify the screen controls of the real exam, and I say so above. The three pass split and the weekly drills are my suggestions.
To practise with a clock running, Etest JAMB CBT has timed modes from 60 to 180 minutes. Start with a short one and write down your times.
