Building apps and platforms in Nigeria
How to Start an Online School in Nigeria
Validate your course, pick a model, choose features for phones and slow data, decide build or buy, and launch. Exam platforms from $8,000.

To start an online school in Nigeria, prove people want your course before you build anything, then choose between a hosted tool and a custom platform, add payments and lesson delivery that work on a phone, and launch to a small group first. An exam platform from me starts from $8,000.
Key points
- Validate first: a landing page and a waitlist cost far less than a platform nobody wanted.
- Decide the model: one teacher with courses, a marketplace of many teachers, or an exam practice platform.
- Design for phones and patchy data: small pages, resumable lessons and downloads where you can.
- My exam or CBT platforms start from $8,000, my websites from $2,500. A hosted tool can cost less to start and you will not own it.
How do I know people will pay for my courses?
Ask for something small before you build. Make a one page site that describes the course, who it is for and the price you plan to charge, and share it where your students already are, such as WhatsApp groups and your social accounts. Count how many people join a waitlist or pay a small deposit.
A useful target is a number you choose before you start, for example 30 sign ups in two weeks. If you miss it, change the course or the audience, not the software.
Which kind of online school should I build?
| Model | What it is | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Single teacher school | Your own branded site with your courses | Teachers, coaches, consultants |
| Marketplace | Many teachers upload, students buy from any of them | Training companies, founders with a network |
| Exam practice platform | Timed questions, scoring and explanations | Exam prep such as JAMB, WAEC or professional exams |
| Company training portal | Staff lessons with progress tracking | HR teams and training firms |
I build exam and CBT platforms, and I built an exam practice app myself: Etest CBT, with 5,553 past questions and timed exams. I have not built a video course marketplace as a product of my own, so I will not claim that experience.
What features does an online school need?
- Content delivery. Lessons as video, text or PDF, grouped into modules.
- Payments. Paystack and Flutterwave are common choices for Nigerian cards and bank transfers.
- Student accounts. Sign in, progress and the course library in one place.
- Quizzes and scoring. For an exam school, timed papers, a score and an explanation for each answer.
- Phone first design. Most of your students will use a phone, so test every page on one.
- Admin tools. A way for you to add a lesson without calling a developer.
Should I build a custom platform or use a hosted tool?
Start with the hosted tool if you are still testing the idea. It is faster and you can leave. Move to a custom build when you hit a limit you can name, such as a payment flow the tool cannot do, an exam format it cannot score, or fees that grow with your students.
The trade is ownership. With a custom build with me, you own the code and the assets once the project is paid for. With a hosted tool you rent the platform and its rules.
How do I design for slow connections and phones?
- Keep pages light and avoid auto playing video.
- Offer lessons as text or audio as well as video.
- Let a student resume where they stopped.
- If the lessons are study guides, make them available offline. Etest CBT works offline, study guides included.
- Test on a mid range phone with a weak signal, not only on your own.
What will payment fees take from each sale?
Flutterwave's Nigeria pricing page, read on October 15, 2026, lists 2% per local transaction (a 1.4% fee plus a 0.6% platform fee) and 4.8% for international transactions. Fees change and differ by provider, so check the current page before you plan.
Worked example on 100,000 naira of sales:
- Local card or transfer at 2%: 2,000 naira goes in fees and 98,000 naira reaches you.
- International card at 4.8%: 4,800 naira goes in fees and 95,200 naira reaches you.
That is simple arithmetic on the rates above, ignoring any other charges. Build the fee into your course price from the start.
What does a pilot with ten students look like?
| Week | Action | What you learn |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sell or invite ten students at a founding rate | Whether anyone pays |
| 2 to 3 | Teach one module live or by voice note, on WhatsApp or video | Where they get stuck |
| 4 | Ask each student three questions: what helped, what confused you, what would you pay for | What to build first |
| 5 | Choose a hosted tool or a custom build using their answers | Which feature is truly needed |
A pilot costs almost nothing and removes the biggest risk, which is building for students who do not exist.
How should I launch?
Launch to a small group first, fix what they find, then open to everyone. If search is part of your plan, build the pages so a crawler can read them: see SEO services. For the build itself, read about CBT and exam platform development.
For an example of a timed exam product I built, read my Etest CBT review. If you are budgeting a simpler site first, see what a website costs in Nigeria and how to rank on Google for free. To talk about your school, send a short description through the contact page.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an online school platform cost?
My exam or CBT platforms start from $8,000 and my websites from $2,500, quoted in writing for a fixed scope. A hosted tool can cost less to start, but you rent it instead of owning it.
Do I need an app or is a website enough?
A mobile friendly website is enough to test an idea. Build an app when students need offline lessons, reminders or timed exams on the phone.
Can I take payments from Nigerian students?
Yes. Paystack and Flutterwave are common choices for cards and bank transfers. Check each provider's current fees and requirements yourself.
How much of each sale do payment fees take?
Flutterwave's Nigeria page, read on October 15, 2026, lists 2% for local transactions and 4.8% for international ones. On 100,000 naira of local sales that is 2,000 naira. Check the provider's current page, because rates change.
How do I protect my videos from being shared?
You cannot stop every copy. Watermarking and access control reduce casual sharing, and the stronger protection is a community and updates students value.
What should I do first?
Write the one page description of your course, set a sign up target and share it. Build only after you reach the target.
How I wrote this
I wrote this from how I scope exam platforms and from the Etest CBT facts in my own records, checked on October 15, 2026. I removed the market statistics, the naira price ranges and the competitor examples from the earlier version because I could not source them. I updated this post on October 15, 2026.

Need an exam or CBT platform?
I build computer based test software for schools and exam prep centers. Projects start at $8,000.
