Addicted to Coke Zero or Diet Coke? How to stop, step by step
How to stop drinking Coke Zero or Diet Coke with no sugar to blame: the caffeine, the ritual and the fizz, a taper plan, and the app I built for it.

How to stop drinking Coke Zero or Diet Coke: treat it as three habits. Taper the caffeine, give the ritual a new drink, and keep the fizz with sparkling water. FizzFree is the app built for exactly this, and I made it. It counts diet and zero drinks in the same daily check-in and tracks the caffeine you skip.
Key points
- A zero sugar habit is caffeine, a ritual and the fizz. Each needs its own fix.
- Coca-Cola puts Coke Zero at 34 mg of caffeine per 12 oz can and Diet Coke at 46 mg.
- Most headaches come from caffeine. A taper of one can a week makes them milder for many people.
- FizzFree counts diet and zero soda with regular soda, malt and energy drinks, and shows the caffeine you skip.
- This is general information, not medical advice.
Why is Coke Zero so hard to quit when it has no sugar?
Because sugar was never the hook. A zero sugar can still carries caffeine, it sits inside a routine you repeat every day, and it gives you the cold, sharp fizz your mouth expects. Quitting all three on the same morning is what makes people give up by day three.
- Caffeine. A 2004 review by Juliano and Griffiths found withdrawal symptoms in people who stopped as little as 100 mg a day. Three Diet Cokes gets you past that.
- The ritual. Wood and Neal's 2007 review of habit research says the context itself sets a habit off, and those links change slowly. So the 3 pm urge can outlast the headache by weeks.
- The fizz. Some of what you miss is just bubbles and cold. That's the easiest part to replace.
Honestly, I think the "no sugar, so it's fine" story keeps a lot of people on six cans a day. The health side is in is Coke Zero bad for you.
How do I stop drinking Diet Coke without headaches?
Cut the caffeine slowly instead of all at once. The FDA says that if you drink caffeine every day and want to cut back, do it gradually. Drop one can a week, or swap one can for Diet Coke with no caffeine, which Coca-Cola sells, so the taste stays while the caffeine comes down.
The 2004 review found headaches in about half the people in its experiments, with symptoms lasting 2 to 9 days. Many people report a mild headache for a few days even on a taper. It's still gentler than stopping six cans on a Monday.
If you drink a lot of caffeine, are pregnant, have diabetes or a heart condition, talk to a doctor first. My caffeine withdrawal timeline has the hour by hour version.
What is a simple plan to quit Coke Zero?
Four weeks, one can less each week, with a swap ready for every can you drop. The caffeine comes down in small steps, the ritual keeps a cold drink in your hand, and the fizz stays. This plan is for someone on four cans a day. If you drink fewer, start further down the table.
| Week | Coke Zero or Diet Coke | What replaces the rest | Caffeine from those cans, my arithmetic |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 cans | 1 Diet Coke with no caffeine, or sparkling water | about 102 to 138 mg |
| 2 | 2 cans | sparkling water with lime | about 68 to 92 mg |
| 3 | 1 can, in the morning | sparkling water or unsweetened iced tea | about 34 to 46 mg |
| 4 | none | the swap you liked most in weeks 1 to 3 | 0 mg |
The ranges cover Coke Zero at the low end and Diet Coke at the high end.
- Write down your can times. Lunch, 3 pm, the drive home.
- Drop the evening can first. Keep the 3 pm one longest.
- Stock the swap before the week starts. A craving with an empty fridge is a craving you lose.
- Keep the glass. Sparkling water over ice in your usual glass fools the ritual more than you'd think.
- Plan for a slip. One can on a bad Thursday isn't a reset.
A small aside: I used to think the bubbles were a minor part of this. Then I noticed the question people on X kept asking quitters this year: "what did you replace it with?" So the fizz gets its own step.
A longer taper is in quitting Diet Coke, and swaps in what to drink instead of soda.
Is there an app to stop drinking Coke Zero or Diet Coke?
Yes. FizzFree is the one I built for this. It counts diet and zero soda in the same daily check-in as regular soda, malt drinks and energy drinks. Because a zero can has no sugar, the numbers that move are caffeine and money, and FizzFree tracks both.
- Taper Dial. Lower a weekly allowance step by step, or stop at once.
- Ride the Fizz. A 90 second craving exercise for the 3 pm moment.
- Fizz Map. A quiet nudge 10 minutes before your usual moments.
- No streak to lose. A clean day pops bubbles in The Glass. A fizz day grows the Bubble Monster, and calm days shrink it again.
- No account. Your data stays on your phone.
Version 2.0 has been on Google Play since 27 October 2026. On iPhone, 2.0 is in App Store review, so the App Store has version 1.5 with a streak, savings and a craving timer until then. See FizzFree, or get it on Google Play or the App Store.
Which app fits you?
It depends on what else you're quitting and how much structure you want. A soda tracker suits a single soda habit, a general quit app suits several habits, and a program suits people who want a lesson a day. These descriptions come from each app's own store listing, not from my own testing.
| App | Built for | Good fit if | Phones |
|---|---|---|---|
| FizzFree: Quit Soda Tracker | Regular, diet and zero soda, malt and energy drinks | Your habit is soda and you want to taper and track caffeine | iPhone and Android |
| Quitzilla | Any habit, several at once | You're cutting soda and something else at the same time | iPhone and Android |
| I Am Sober | Alcohol and other addictions, with a community | You want a daily pledge and other people around you | iPhone and Android |
| NoFizz: Quit Soda Now | A 100 day guided soda program | You want a lesson a day and you use an iPhone | iPhone only |

Frequently asked questions
I'm addicted to Coke Zero, is there an app that can help me stop?
Yes. FizzFree, which I made, counts Coke Zero and Diet Coke in the same daily check-in as other soda, tracks the caffeine and money you skip, and lets you taper or stop at once. Quitzilla and I Am Sober count days too, but aren't made for soda.
How do I stop drinking Diet Coke with an app?
Pick a tracker that counts diet soda, set a weekly allowance, then lower it step by step. FizzFree does this with its Taper Dial and shows the caffeine you skip. Keep a swap in the fridge for the times you usually reach for a can.
How do I stop drinking soda without headaches?
Taper. Most soda headaches come from caffeine, and the FDA says to cut daily caffeine gradually. Drop one can a week, or switch to a version with no caffeine first. If a headache is severe or won't ease, see a doctor.
Is Coke Zero addictive?
The caffeine part can be. A 2004 review found withdrawal symptoms in people who stopped as little as 100 mg a day, and three Diet Cokes is more than that. More in is soda addictive.
What can I drink instead of Coke Zero?
Sparkling water with lime keeps the fizz. Diet Coke with no caffeine keeps the taste while you cut caffeine. Unsweetened iced tea keeps some caffeine if you want to deal with that later.
How I wrote this
On 24 October 2026 I read Coca-Cola's caffeine page, the FDA's caffeine guidance, and the abstracts of Juliano and Griffiths' 2004 withdrawal review and Wood and Neal's 2007 habit review. The caffeine ranges are my arithmetic. The other apps are described from their store listings, read on 25 October 2026. I have not used them. The FizzFree details come from the app I built and its Google Play listing. Coca-Cola, Coke Zero and Diet Coke belong to their owners, and I have no link with them.
This is general information, not medical or veterinary advice. If you are pregnant, have diabetes or a heart condition, or drink a lot of caffeine, ask your doctor before you change how much you drink.
