What to drink instead of soda? The closest swap is cold sparkling water with lime or lemon: it keeps the fizz and the ritual with no sugar. If you need the caffeine, unsweetened iced tea or black coffee does that job. Below are 12 swaps, including zobo and tiger nut drink, with the numbers I could check.

    Key points

    • Work out what you miss first: the fizz, the sweetness, the cold or the caffeine. Pick the swap that covers that one thing.
    • Plain sparkling water and club soda have no sugar and no caffeine, per USDA data.
    • Unsweetened zobo is a good West African swap only if you leave the sugar out. Brewed hibiscus tea has 0 g sugar in the USDA database.
    • Diet soda can be a step down, but it still carries caffeine and keeps the soda habit going.
    • I could not find reliable sugar figures for tiger nut drink or sweetened zobo, so I give none. Read the label or ask the seller.

Which swap fits what you miss about soda?

A swap fails when it replaces the wrong thing. If you miss the bite of the bubbles, juice will not help. If it is the 3 pm lift, water will not help either. So start with the one thing you would miss most, then use the table.

The CDC puts a 12 ounce can of regular soda at more than 10 teaspoons of added sugar, about 42 grams. Every row below has less, most of them far less.

    # Swap Sugar per 100 ml Caffeine per 100 ml Good for
1 Plain sparkling water or club soda 0 g 0 mg Fizz
2 Sparkling water with lime or lemon slices close to 0 g 0 mg Fizz and taste
3 Sparkling water with a splash of 100% juice some, from the juice 0 mg Fizz and a little sweetness
4 Unsweetened iced black tea 0 g about 20 mg Energy
5 Black coffee, hot or iced 0 g about 40 mg Energy
6 Unsweetened zobo or hibiscus tea 0 g 0 mg Cold, sour and red
7 Kunun aya or tiger nut drink depends on the recipe 0 mg Creamy and filling
8 Fresh coconut water about 2.6 g 0 mg Light sweetness
9 Cold water with cucumber, mint or ginger 0 g 0 mg The cold glass habit
10 Decaf coffee or decaf tea 0 g small The coffee ritual without much caffeine
11 Diet or zero sugar soda, as a step 0 g about 10 to 13 mg Same taste, less sugar
12 Prebiotic soda read the label read the label Fizz with a sweet taste

Where the numbers come from: rows 1, 4, 5, 6 and 8 are USDA FoodData Central values, which are listed per 100 grams. For water based drinks that is close to 100 ml. Row 10 is from the FDA, which puts decaf coffee at 2 to 15 mg per 8 ounce cup. Row 11 is my arithmetic from Coca-Cola's own figures: 34 mg in a 12 ounce Coke Zero Sugar and 46 mg in a 12 ounce Diet Coke.

What is the closest drink to soda without the sugar?

Sparkling water. It is the only swap that keeps the bubbles, the cold can and the sound of opening it, and it has nothing in it. That matters more than people think. A lot of the soda habit is the ritual, not the taste.

Plain fizzy water can taste flat in the first week, I will be honest about that. Squeeze in lime, lemon or orange. Drop in a slice of ginger. The CDC suggests a splash of 100% juice in sparkling water, and that is a fair middle step. Keep the splash small, because the NHS says to keep fruit juice and smoothies to one 150 ml glass a day in total.

What can I drink instead of soda when I need caffeine?

Unsweetened iced tea or black coffee. Both give you caffeine with no sugar. USDA lists brewed black tea at about 20 mg of caffeine per 100 g and brewed coffee at about 40 mg, so a mug of coffee usually carries more caffeine than a can of cola.

This is the swap I would push hardest for people who drink cola or Diet Coke in the afternoon. You keep the lift. You lose the sugar. If you later want to cut caffeine too, decaf coffee is a gentle next step, and the FDA says cutting back gradually is the way to do it. My caffeine withdrawal timeline explains what to expect.

One warning from experience: sweet iced tea from a bottle is a different drink. The CDC lists brewed sweet tea at about 7 teaspoons of sugar per 12 ounces. Check the label.

Which Nigerian and West African drinks work as soda swaps?

Zobo, kunun aya and fresh coconut water are the three I see most, and all three can work. The catch is sugar. Each one can be made with almost none or with a lot, and the label or the seller is the only way to know.

    • Zobo. Brewed hibiscus with no sugar has 0 g sugar and 0 calories in the USDA data. Most homemade zobo adds sugar, pineapple or both, and then it is a sweet drink. Ask for it without sugar, or make your own. I wrote more on this in my post on zobo, and I keep it to sugar. I do not repeat the health claims about blood pressure or pregnancy that go round on WhatsApp.
    • Kunun aya or tiger nut drink. It is creamy and filling, so it works when you want something with body. I could not find a label or a database value I trust for its sugar, and recipes vary a lot. If it comes in a bottle with a label, read it.
    • Fresh coconut water. USDA lists coconut water from the nut at about 2.6 g of sugar per 100 g, which is far less than soda. Packaged coconut water can have sugar added, so check.

Malt drinks are not on this list on purpose. They are not soda, but they are sweet. I am checking their labels for a separate post.

Are diet soda and prebiotic soda good swaps?

They can be a step, not the finish line. Diet and zero sugar sodas have no sugar, and the NHS lists diet and sugar free drinks as a swap for sugary ones. But they keep the soda taste and the soda habit, and most colas still carry caffeine.

The WHO also made a conditional recommendation in 2023 against using non sugar sweeteners to control body weight. It does not apply to people with diabetes, and WHO's wider advice is to reduce the sweetness of the diet overall. My read: diet soda is fine as a bridge for a few weeks if it gets you off sugar, and less useful as a forever drink.

Prebiotic sodas are newer and the labels vary. Some have a few grams of sugar per can, some more. I am not going to repeat gut health claims from the cans, because I have not seen evidence I would stand behind. Read the sugar line on the label, and treat them as a sweet fizzy drink.

How do I make a soda swap stick?

Put the swap where the soda used to be. Same time, same place, same cold glass. If you used to buy a Coke with lunch, buy a sparkling water with lunch. A habit is easier to replace than to delete.

    Three things that help:

    • Keep the swap cold and ready. Two bottles in the fridge beat good intentions.
    • Plan for the craving minute. Have the swap in hand before the urge peaks.
    • Count the days. A streak gives you something to protect.

That last part is why I built FizzFree. It tracks regular soda, diet soda and energy drinks. When a craving hits, Craving SOS gives you a timer, swaps and your own reason for quitting. The tracker is free with ads, Premium is optional, and it is on iPhone and Android. If you want a full plan around the swap, my 14 day quit soda plan walks through it.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the healthiest drink to replace soda?

Water, plain or sparkling, is the simplest answer, because it has no sugar and no caffeine. If you need flavour, add lime, lemon, cucumber or a small splash of juice. Unsweetened tea and black coffee work if you miss the caffeine.

What can I drink when I crave soda?

Something cold and fizzy, ready in the fridge. Sparkling water with lime is closest. If the craving is for energy, try unsweetened iced tea or black coffee. Having the swap in hand before the urge peaks matters more than which swap you choose.

Is zobo a good substitute for soda?

Yes, if it is unsweetened. Brewed hibiscus with no sugar has 0 g sugar and no caffeine in USDA data. Zobo made with lots of sugar or pineapple is a sweet drink, so ask the seller or make your own and taste before you sweeten.

Is sparkling water as bad as soda?

No. Plain sparkling water and club soda have no sugar and no calories in USDA data. Flavoured sparkling drinks can have sugar or sweeteners added, so read the label. If it says only carbonated water and natural flavour, it is a different drink from soda.

Is diet soda a good way to quit soda?

It can be a short step. Diet soda removes the sugar but keeps the taste, the habit and usually the caffeine. Many people use it for a few weeks, then move to sparkling water. The WHO advises against relying on sweeteners for weight control.

    How I wrote this

On 24 October 2026 I read the USDA FoodData Central entries for club soda, brewed black tea, brewed coffee, brewed hibiscus tea and coconut water, the FDA caffeine page, the CDC Rethink Your Drink page, the NHS drinks page, Coca-Cola's caffeine figures and the WHO sweetener guideline. I could not find reliable sugar figures for tiger nut drink, sweetened zobo or prebiotic sodas, so I left the numbers out. I did not include prices, because I have no dated source for them. The FizzFree details come from the app I built.
